Harrisburg, PA (6/23/17) -- The PA Legislative Budget & Finance Committee released a report of PA’s Program for Beneficial Use of Biosolids by Land Application. They recommend the idea of odor management plans to be added to the Biosolids quality enhancement plans.

Honolulu, HI (6/23/17) -- Honolulu is moving towards the notion that sewage sludge can be a resource when processed with the right technology. Honolulu’s H-Power plant produces energy from sewage sludge processing.

Mat-Su Borough, AK (6/23/17) -- The Mat-Su borough board voted to ban the land application of biosolids within the borough at a recent meeting.

Tremonton City Reopens Compost Facility for Summer Season
Trementon, UT (6/28/2017) -- The Tremonton City Compost Facility has reopened after being closed for the winter due to snow and poor drainage in the area. The facility accepts lumber that is grounded up and mixed with biosolids from the Tremonton Wastewater Treatment Facility. The composting facility produces a Class A product.

Public Comment Sought on Maui Sludge Drying/Biogas Facility
Maui, HI (6/28/17) -- “The County of Maui has selected Maui All Natural Alternative or MANA as the operator of a proposed renewable energy and sludge drying project at the Wailuku – Kahului Wastewater Reclamation Facility. The biogas facility would utilize equipment to digest energy crops grown on former Hawaiian Commercial and Sugar company plantation lands, and sourced locally from Central Maui Feedstocks.” The facility would produce energy that would be used in biosolids production at the Kahului Wastewater Reclamation Facility.

Concern Over Build-up of Hazardous Materials on Land Spread with Sewage Sludge
Ireland (6/19/17) -- Two research projects in Ireland have contributed to uncertainty around land application of biosolids. Anne Maire McMahon from the Marine and Freshwater Research Centre at Galway Mayo Institute of Technology (GMIT) led a study identifying Urban wastewater treatment plants as one of the largest point sources of microplastics. Also, Teagasc research has concluded that unlegislated metals, PPCPs and microplastics, found to be present in biosolids originating from a selection of Wastewater Treatment Plants, may be inadvertently applied to land.
 

Summerside Using Human Waste-Based Fertilizer on Green Spaces
Summerside, PE, Canada (6/20/2017) -- The city of Summerside is land applying biosolids in various areas and has developed a communications plan around the land applications. The city hopes to mitigate public concerns and conflict surrounding the application by warning the public before biosolids is applied, including direct communication with sports associations before it is used on sports fields. Summerside was mentioned the Newsclips last year.

Toronto, ON, Canada (6/28/17) -- The 6th Annual Water’s Next Award ceremonies were held at in Toronto earlier this month. “Lystek International was presented with two, national Water’s Next Awards – the first in the Project/Technology – Wastewater category and the second for overall Company of the Year.”
 

Human Sewage Sludge Plan for Dalquhandy Opencast Site
Scotland (6/29/17) -- Hargreaves, the company responsible for restoration of the Dalquhandy opencast mine site, formerly the biggest opencast mine in western Europe will be using biosolids to help restore vegetation. The company held a public meeting to inform and address public concerns. Even with the outreach some residents expressed their concerns through social media.
