Swept Away, Leaves Get a New Life, Biosolids Facility Turns Them into Valuable Compost

Fort Wayne, IN (12/7/14) – The Fort Wayne Biosolids Handling Facility takes sewage and yard waste such as grass clippings and leaves to compost for fertilizer. Leaves are transported to the facility and kept for a year, where the composting process begins. Eventually treated sewage from the city’s wastewater treatment plant is mixed with the leaves. After the final step of drying the material and filtering out larger clumps, residents are permitted to pick up the material free of charge if they load it themselves. There is a fee to have employees do the loading.
